Notes for Henry SOLOMON
Note the source is ambiguous saying that Henry Solomon was married by Matilda
389 (p.17) and by Matha
393 (p. 4). Elsewhere Matha is said to have married Nathan Solomon (Slomon)
394 (p. 17). The latter is taken to be correct here, but subject to confirmation. He had 10 children.
Henry Solomon spent 16 years as Chief of Police in Brighton and was eventually murdered by John Lawrence who was publicly hanged for the crime at Horsham on 6 April 1844.

1. Emanuel Hyman Cohen and Hannah Benjamin definitely had a son called Nathan Cohen B. 1817 D. 1873 but other sources seem to suggest there was a Benjamin Nathan Cohen (older brother born in 1798 who went to the US but I cannot verify this.
2. You have Matilda down as the Wife of Henry Solomon. Henry Solomon's death is well-documented he was a police commissioner and murdered in his own station by a prisoner. Reports at the time say that money was raised by the community for his wife and 9 children. He died in 1844. The blip ? is that I have read a 1841 Census in Brighton which lists a Nathan Cohen aged 22 , Matilda Cohen aged 20 and Isaacs's Cohen aged 11. Maybe this could be another Cohen family but it feels unlikely given the address it seems to be by the Synagogue and the family was very involved with this and the community. I believe this must be Nathan son of Emanuel Hyman and Hannah by the address and his occupation it sort of ties up. If this is him and Matilda surely if the age is right (which it is for Nathan) she could not have had nine children before Henry died.
