Notes for Abraham HART
The London Post Office Directory 1846 lists Samuel Hart as a clothier living at 3 Barbican, and as the 1841 census shows Abraham Hart at number 3, I therefore consider that with the information (from Samuel's tombstone) that the name of his father was Abraham, there is a good chance that the gentleman found in the 1841 census is a member of our family.

In the 1841 census Abraham is found living in the Barbican no 1, in a house which appears to be have a Coffee House downstairs. Also living in the same house were ... Hawkrigg aged 40 and his wife aged 40, daughter aged 2, both born in the county. Also Geo Turner aged 20 a shopman with his wife Harriet also 20, and both born in the county. Also in the house Abraham Hart aged 50 and traveller not born in the county and Chas Aaron aged 17 a shopman and J Fairchild. (City of London HO107/724/10 Parish of St Botolph, Aldersgate. Registrar's District Cripplegate, Enumeration district 14, East London.)

If he was still living in 1851 he was not at the same address in the census. I suspect he was no longer alive.

It is possible that the name of his wife was Rachael. In a list of Naming records of the New Synagogue there is a reference to an Abraham Hart who lives at Rosemary Lane, the date of birth of the child was 1 Jan 1824 with the name Rachael. Whether this is a reasonable assumption I am not sure.

In his book 'Sources of Anglo-Jewish Genealogy', Wilfred Samuel writes that the name of Hart probably comes from the Hebrew 'Zevi' (a stag) which was then Germanized into Hirsch or Hirschel, then Anglicized into Hart, only to emerge finally as Harris'. Bernard Susser, the author of 'the Jews of the South-West of England' writes that Hirsch is usually anglicised to Harris and then Harry.

That he is the father of Samuel is taken from the his Hebrew name shown on Samuel's headstone on his grave.
