At the time of his marriage he gave his occupation as Furnishing Warehouse man and that his usual residence was Moore Park, Sydney
It would seem that Joseph was running the Goulburn Hotel in 1890 when he advertised 'The establishment having been thoroughly renovated, now offers peculiar inducements to parties visiting Goulburn and the proprietor begs to assure families and gentlemen favouring him with their patronage that they may rely upon the utmost attention being paid to their requirements, it being his desire to make his Hostelry Second to None in the Colony.'
