Notes for Phyllis Marjorie SAMPSON
Ermelo Private Hospital was probably where the Eye Hospital was located prior to moving to Sydney Hospital in Nov 1995. I checked this through Sands Directory of 1912 which confirms its location, and lists 'Nurse Johnson and Miss Gould'. Her mother (Clarice) told Phyllis that it was the rather triangular building on the corner of Sir John Young Crescent and Crown Street. This description fits the building exactly.

The early days of her childhood were spent at Youngara, corner of Gordon & Rowley Streets, Burwood where she lived with her parents and grandparents. They later moved to Manly where they stayed for about 3 - 5 years, and then to the eastern suburbs of Sydney. For about 6 months they lived at Upton Court, Forbes Street, Darlinghurst then to Mount Edgecumbe on the corner of Ocean St and New South Head Road, Edgecliff, then later to Craigievar flats, corner of Etham Avenue and Sutherland Crescent, Darling Point, Darling Point.

It amused Mum that in 1999 she came to live in an apartment in Eastpoint Tower sited almost exactly where Mount Edgecumbe once stood.

TP Sampson was the architect of Upton Court, and it is possible that he was also a part owner of the building with Mr Minter of Minter Simpson, solicitors.9
