Some information from Philip Cohen who advises that when Samuel married he used the name Samuel Henry Cohen. This name was also used by him in business and is the name found in the Records of Insolvency where there are two references to him. 2/8659, item 61 and 2/8879, item 3274.

From reading these files it would seem that his principal creditor was his father Henry who was also appointed the Trustee by the other creditors. These insolvencies will be discussed in a separate WORD file. 9

In 1841 the family moved to Port Macquarie and Samuel and Eliza openeda business, S & E Cohen, Auctioners and Commission Agents, in 1842 hewas declared bankrupt and his lands at Mudgee, Port Macquarie andScone were sold, he appeared to have speculated heavily during theboon years, a lean year 1841 followed. Samuel and his wife Eliza tookover the store being operated by Henry & Elizabeth Cohen in 1845 afterHenry received his conditional pardon. He left for the goldfields in1851 and apparently did well out of it, he purchased the wreck of the"Wanderer" and auctioned the remains and contents.

In the end of 1855 the family moved to Melbourne where he joined hisbrother Edward and Elias Moses in an importing business, this beingdissolved in 1857 by mutual consent. In 1859 still with Edward andthis time Alex Fraser, Sam is a partner in Fraser & Cohen, Auctioneersand Mercantile Agents.
