Notes for Harriet BENJAMIN
At the time of her marriage Harriet gave her place of residence as 64 Holywell Lane, Shoreditch.

There is some confusion about her place in the family tree. On one of Jessop's charts she is shown as daughter of Lyon Benjamin and on another as daughter of Moses and Catherine Benjamin. She was definitely the daughter of Lyon Benjamin. This was confirmed when at the time of his death a notice was inserted in the Adelaide newspaper which read - 17 April 1862 BENJAMIN-On the 7th February, at the residence of S. Benjamin, Esq., Clifton Gardens, Maida Hill, London, in his 86th year, Lyon Benjamin Esq., father to Mrs S Hart, of this city, much esteemed by all who knew him. (see Register 19 April 1862 for amended entry)

Also Lyon named both Harriet and Sarah in his will.

19 April 1862 BENJAMIN- On the 7th February, at the residence of his son, Brunswick House, Clifton Gardens, Maida Hill, London, Lyon Benjamin Esq., in the 84th year of his age, father of Mrs Myers of Kent Town, deeply lamented by his family and friends.

There appears to be a difference of opinion regarding Lyon's age! Harriet's marriage to Samuel Hart is shown in St Catherine's House 1840 London June quarter Vol 2, page 170A. In this she gives her father's name as Lewis Benjamin of 64 Holywell Lane, Shoreditch. Her age is entered as 'full age'. The witnesses were Solomon Marks and Moses Levy.

Her exact date of birth is unknown, a family list shows her as aged 66 when she died (also see VIC BDM REG 9194, 1878, Melbourne). The certificate shows father Lionel Benjamin, gentleman, mother Mary Benjamin formerly Moses. Born London Age 66 with the cause of death as chronic Icteris (?) and exhaustion, three months. Her address at the time was 5 Grey Street, 3 Albert Ward, City of Melbourne. It shows that she was born in London and had been thirty years in South Australia and seven years in Victoria. She was married in London at the age of thrity six to Samuel Hart and lists five children. Edward appears to have been forgotten. The ages of the children are difficult to read but both Rachel and Benjamin appear to be 36 years old.

Dr Klee Benenviste, Hon Archivist of the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation wrote to me on 26th October 2000 with many details regarding the Hart family in Adelaide in as regards Harriet wrote that 'in the first Hebrew Name Book of the congregation used for a reading of the Torah, the Hebrew names include Mrs S Hart as Hegeleh bat Yehudah, and that this supports my note that Harriet was the daughter of Lyon (ie Yehudah Benjamin).

In order to establish the date when she left Adelaide and went to live in Melbourne Boothby's Directories of South Australia were searched from 1865 to 1872. The 1865 to 1867 editions show S Hart as an importer of 63 Hindley Street. 1868 shows Mrs S Hart at Hindley Street west and also a Mrs Hart (no initial) at Cambridge Street NA (presumably North Adelaide). This continued until 1871, after which no entry was found and presumably she then left to live in Melbourne. Given that directories are collated in the 12 months previous to their printing 1870 was very likely the last year she lived in Adelaide.

It is possible that she is the Mrs Hart accompanied by Miss Hart, who arrived in South Australia from the Swan River in the schooner Victoria on 11 Feb 1845.
