Robert was born in Budapest in 1945 right after the siege, on May 16th 1945. His father was saved by papers signed by Raoul Wallenberg. His mother was in hiding with her eldest son. Robert was the family's miracle child, one of several Jewish children to be born when no one was to be conceived. Robert's brother left Budapest in 1956, Robert in 1963, followed by his parents. Lucy met Robert in 1966 at New York University. They were married in New York in 1968 and later lived in Paris and Vienna before settling in Budapest . They are both American citizens, Robert has dual citizenship, American and Hungarian. Lucy graduated in History and worked as a journalist in New York, Paris and Vienna. Robert graduated from New York University and Columbia University in International Affairs and Economics, specializing in Eastern-Central Europe. They moved to Hungary where Robert and Lucy have worked in business since 1979. Their two daughters, Noemi and Sandra, were born in Budapest.
