Notes for Rachel NATHAN
Due to the enormous amount of material available online I have now found Rachel in the 1871. Living with her was her daughter Charlotte Moses, and granddaughters Hannah Moses 5 b Liverpool , Rachel 3 b Australia.

Rachel can be found in the 1881 census of England (ref 0028/87/2).She was difficult to find her as she was listed under the initial S, and Clanricarde was written as Flanricarde. Her age was given as 60, which could not have been correct. Living with her was her daughter Charlotte Moses, listed as A.L., (age given as 35), born in Australia. I found Rachel when searching for any 'Moses' born in Australia. I think the information must have been given to one of the staff (four in number) to give to the census collector. Also living in the house was her niece R M Cohen (Born London age 15) , and two granddaughters R.A. Cohen (Rosetta born London age 15) & R C Moses (born Liverpool age 13).

In the census of 1891 she is at 9 Clanricarde Gardens with Charlotte Moses her daughter a widow aged 45/8. Lilley Cohen described as her niece, but really her granddaughter aged 26 and Leo Cohen her nephew, but really her grandchild aged 18. She is not listed as Rachel Cohen except in the census of 1871.

I have her will with four codicils. Probate was granted to Lewis Samuel Cohen and Benn Woolf Levy and the value of her estate was 38,816-3-9 UKL. She was living in London at 8 Woburn Place when the will was first made on 4 March 1869. The will was made in London, dated ..... which illustrates that she left Australia relatively soon after the death of her husband.

I hold copies of two photographs of her. Her death certificate shows her as aged 78, ie born 1814/15.

The Jewish Chronicle of Nov 3,1893 - On the 26th October at 5 Clanricarde Gardens, Rachel widow of Samuel Cohen MLA of Sydney, New South Wales in her 80th year.
