Notes for George Judah COHEN
His birth was registered in NSW Jewish Births, corresponding with A.M. 5601. Performed by Jacob Isaacs. Presumably this was circumcision. The register records his birthplace as Maitland, contradicting family lore which says Bridge St Sydney. The marriage was in Sydney and performed by Rev S Phillips. I have checked the actual records and they correspond exactly with marriage certificate. I also looked for an announcement of his birth in Sydney Morning Herald but found nothing. According to Registrar of BDM s, his birth was registered at West Maitland, the number is V 1842212-136. Another reference is V1842 1443 159

Death: His grave is with that of his wife Re, in the oldest part of the Jewish section at Rookwood.

In Walter Samson & Co's New South Wales National Directory for 1867 - pub Walter Jameson Meyer; L W Levy JP at Cahors 107 Macleay St (D.Cohen & Co) p 452 Maitland - Cohen G Church St, also Cohen M Church St. The same Directory carried an advertisement for Weekes & Co Ironmongers.

In the application to marry (June 1895) of Aunt Lil, his address was 24 Onslow Avenue, Elizabeth Bay. This must have been the house Engadine. The numbering of the houses in Onslow Avenue has changed several times over the years. Research in the archives of the Sydney City Council show it variously as number 2, and in a map dated 1949 as number 10. This numbering would seem to correspond with today's numbering. CHECK this, using the apartments 'Belltrees' for guidance. The house Engadine was built in 1885/6, and sold in 1937 (see The Sun newspaper, 7th August 1937). The number '2' is correct as this is shown as the address of Alroy when he informed the registrar of the death of his grandmother, Julia, and was the number shown at the time of the death of Re and George Cohen.

The Sands Directory of 1883 lists him as living at 87 Darlinghurst Road. This is probably the house 'Hopes' which is the house where Sefton was born. The Directory lists several people at number 85, Philip B Walker, George Cohen and Mrs Charles J Fairfax.

Royal Australian Historical Society (RAHS) Index shows Cohen, G J , Scholar at Cleveland St, Vol X VI, p 269. Cleveland House became a school - A Mr James Keane established a school, and remained in his possession until the year 1867. This school appears to have been a large and flourishing establishment, and many of its scholars were, in later years, among our leading citizens. .. A few of the survivors are Archdeacon Boyce, Mr G J Cohen, and Mr E C Laycock. The location of the House was - I think this was the house named Cleveland House which probably had grounds that extended to Cleveland Street. It can still be seen in a dilapidated state quite close to the Sydney Building Centre in Elizabeth Street.

George was sent to England to attend school in 1859. He left Sydney on board the 'Malta' on 14th April of that year. His father, Samuel, writing to his brother David, said 'I wish him to go to a first class boarding as much for the improvement of Hebrew instruction as English. I am desirous he should be an 'orthodox Jew' and know his religion , so as to be able to appreciate its virtues.

The 'Malta' was a steamship of the P & O Line which arrived in Sydney on 8th April 1859, having left Southampton on January 20th. The Sydney Morning Herald of 14th (page 4, column 1) lists George amongst the passengers along with several members of the Moses family. George is shown as Master L Cohen. In the same newspaper the ship is listed as 910 tons, but the Register of the Arrivals and Departures of Vessels (Reel 2770) shows it as 2000 tons. P & O advertised the ship in the SMH of 7th April thus -

1870 tons, 500 horse power, Henry Down, Esq, commander will leave this port with her Majesty's mail, passengers and cargo, on Thursday the 14th April at 9 am, touching at Melbourne, Kangaroo Island and King Georg's Sound.

In England he attended the 'Jews' College'. Before two years were up his father died and he immediately returned to Sydney in order to become involved in the business. Paul Cullen asserts that he returned home via the United States and that he purchased a large table in San Francisco which is currently in the dindnig room at Wingello Park.

PAC recently gave me a copy of an extract from the Register of Proposals for Membership for the Union Club. The proposer For GJC's membership was I R French and the seconder was R Jones. The date was July 2nd 1907. He was duly elected.

In the book written to celebrate its centenary, 'A Century of Banking, The Commercial Banking Co. of Sydney Limited 1834-1934, he is listed as a Director from 1885-1933, being the Chairman in 1892, and 1900-1933.

The Mitchell Library holds a scrapbook (Q394/C) donated to them by his son Alroy, described as 'An Album of invitations to G J Cohen with menus etc. This was a fascinating book full of beautiful illuminated invitations and other memorabilia. It would appear that GJ and Re visited England in 18.. and were present at various gatherings in Liverpool (England) where they attended the opening of the David Lewis Hospital. Also included is a photograph of the casket given to Benn W Levy when he was made a Freeman of the City of Liverpool. His photograph can be seen in many publications in the Mitchell Library, including the Cyclopedia of NSW of 1907 (page 523).

GJ's portrait by George Lambert, now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. Formerly it was hung in the head office (George Street) of the Commercial Banking Co of Sydney, which was taken over by the National Australia Bank. At the request of the family they donated it to the Gallery. It was installed there on the same day as that of his grandson Paul Cullen.

In the 1904 Directory of NSW there is a listing for 10 Spring Street for David Cohen & Co, and at 12 Spring Street, Cohen's Chambers.

I have his will, part of his Probate Packet and Deceased Estate File. These are discussed in a WORD file.9

George Judah Cohen (1842-1937), banker, took over the Maitland office of his fatherís wholesale firm David Cohen and Co. when he was just 19. Returning to Sydney with a reputation as a financial expert, he joined the board of the Commercial Banking Company in 1885. After steering the company through the financial crises of the 1890s, he became its chairman of directors in 1901. He held this position for 32 years, during the last of which the bank weathered the Depression. From the late 1880s to the early 1930s, Cohen was also chairman of many other companies, including Australian Gas Light, United Insurance, Tooth and Co. and the Sydney Exchange. He and his wife Rebecca Levy amassed a significant collection of antiques and European paintings; he was a liberal, yet low-key, supporter of various charities, and a lifelong advocate for the Jewish community.1341
