In the will of his mother he is named Eliot. He later took the name Eliot-Lewis as his surname. At the time of the 1881 census he was listed as Eliot S Levy, age 28, born Maitland and living with his uncle David Lewis at 30 Devonshire Road, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.

The Maitland Mercury carries the announcement of his birth Mrs L W Levy late of Tamworth - Birth of a son at residence in High Street, West Maitland on 22 April 1854.
